This 21-message series, Limitations of Civil Government, examines the biblical duty of the church toward civil government and the constitutional, statutory, and common-law limits placed upon federal, state, county, and municipal authority in ecclesiastical affairs. Drawing from Scripture, American history, political philosophy, Wisconsin law, and landmark judicial decisions, these messages seek to recover the principles of ordered liberty, freedom of conscience, and limited government that have long distinguished the American constitutional tradition.

Written in the spirit of the Political Sermons of the American Founding Era, this series explores the proper relationship between church and state—not to advocate political parties or movements, but to clarify jurisdictions ordained by God and recognized by law. It calls Christians and citizens alike to understand both the duties owed to lawful civil authority and the limits beyond which civil power may not rightfully pass.
