Sermon III: The Ministry of the Sword and the Ministry of the Word
The message teaches Christ established two distinct ministries, each ordained by God for a different purpose. Civil government bears the sword to preserve justice, restrain evil, and maintain public order, while Christ entrusted His church with the ministry of the Word to proclaim the gospel, shepherd souls, and advance His eternal kingdom. This message explores the biblical, historical, constitutional, and common-law boundaries that preserve both institutions from jurisdictional overreach. Through Scripture, the wisdom of the American Founders, state constitutions, and lessons from church history, we discover that liberty flourishes only when Caesar remains within his God-given jurisdiction and the church faithfully fulfills hers. The sermon concludes by lifting our eyes above every earthly kingdom to Christ, whose reign alone is everlasting.
